The little towns around Yosemite National Park depend on tourism for their economies and are still reeling from the Yosemite Rim Fire that brought tourism to a near standstill last month.
This morning, the National Park Service ordered all visitors out of the park due to the government shutdown, causing lodges and concessionaires to lay off employees and close.

Congressman Tom McClintock today introduced HR 3188, the Yosemite Rim Fire Emergency Salvage Act. The measure provides for the expedited salvage of fire-killed timber in the Stanislaus National Forest and the Yosemite National Park by waiving environmental regulations and litigation that often delay salvage operations until the timber becomes worthless.

This act takes on poignant and crucial importance to my district in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, where the Yosemite Rim fire continues to burn through more than 400 square miles of forest land.

I rise today to warn of the latest episode in a saga that can best be described as "Greens Gone Wild." It involves the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to declare two million acres in the Sierra Nevada Mountains as "critical habitat" for the Sierra Nevada Yellow Legged Frog and the Yosemite Toad under the Endangered Species Act.

I rise today in strong opposition to a proposal by the National Park Service to remove long-standing tourist facilities from Yosemite National Park, including bicycle and raft rentals, snack facilities, gift shops, horseback riding, the ice rink at Curry Village, tennis courts and swimming pools, the art center and the historic stone Sugar Pine Bridge

Committee Markup Statement: HR 934 simply conforms the Merced River's Wild and Scenic River boundary with the pre-existing Federal Energy Regulatory Commission hydroelectric boundary for Lake McClure - which should have been done when the original designation was made. The boundary change would enable the district to study the possibility of increasing the New Exchequer Dam's spillway by ten feet, making it possible to temporarily store about 70,000 acre feet of additional water
