The Honorable David Bernhardt
Acting Secretary of the Interior
U.S. Department of the Interior
1849 C Street Northwest
Washington, D.C. 20240
Dear Acting Secretary Bernhardt:
U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock, CA-04, joined by 13 California members of the House of Representatives called on President Trump to continue to provide federal assistance for fire suppression and recovery.
“For the state of California to endure these catastrophic wildfires, it is going to take your continued leadership and support,” the letter to the President said. “We stand ready to assist you in expediting federal support to impacted communities.” A copy of the letter is attached.
For many years, forest management and fire-prevention took a back-seat at these summits, but now nature is screaming its warning at us as fires rage throughout the west: the Tahoe Basin is on borrowed time. The fires all around us present a stark question: How much longer does Tahoe have? Will the view at next year’s summit be one of burned out structures, blackened vistas and an ash-choked lake?
I am deeply sorry for the tragic loss of this young man, Braden Varney. To
his wife and children go my deepest sympathy. To his fellow Cal Fire heroes,
please know as you mourn your colleague, we appreciate all you do to keep us
