August 7, 2018 Speeches

For many years, forest management and fire-prevention took a back-seat at these summits, but now nature is screaming its warning at us as fires rage throughout the west: the Tahoe Basin is on borrowed time.  The fires all around us present a stark question: How much longer does Tahoe have?  Will the view at next year’s summit be one of burned out structures, blackened vistas and an ash-choked lake?

I was deeply saddened to learn that the Ferguson Fire has taken the life of yet another firefighter, Capt. Brian Hughes of Squaw Valley, on Sunday and that bulldozer operator Don Ray Smith of Pollock Pines died Thursday while fighting the Carr fire. Their deaths remind us how much we owe every one of the thousands of dedicated men and women who stand between these fires and our homes and families. They know the dangers better than any, yet day after day and year after year take the front lines to stop these monster fires.

Congressman McClintock delivered the following tribute to fallen fire fighter Braden Varney before the House of Representatives:

Mr. Speaker:

I rise to honor a hero of the Sierra and to mourn his tragic loss.  Braden Varney, age 36, gave his life Saturday night fighting the Ferguson Fire, which continues to ravage the forests near Yosemite Valley and threaten the communities of Mariposa County.

I write to support the many local citizen groups that are seeking a resolution declaring that Placer County opposes California’s so-called sanctuary laws.
May 16, 2018 Press Release
President Trump highlighted the problems caused by California’s outrageous sanctuary state policies today by hearing directly from Californians, including our El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini, about the threat to public safety these policies pose to Californians.

A recent editorial in the Modesto Bee ridicules the “naming” bills that I have authored, especially the naming of a mountain in the Sierra as “Sky Point.” Each of these laws honors young men from our district who died in combat. “Sky Point” was named in honor of Marine Staff Sergeant Sky Mote who died defending his station in Afghanistan in 2012.
April 16, 2018 Press Release
The National Park Service currently manages 11 units that provide medical services to park visitors, employees, and nearby residents including Yosemite in my district, Yellowstone, Zion, the Grand Canyon, and Death Valley. These include emergency medical services, ambulance transport and clinical services. They treat colds, set broken bones, stabilize heart attacks and strokes, evacuate the severely injured and treat thousands of patients annually.

When Delavan, Illinois approached its 125th anniversary in 1961, a resident wrote to Wilford Funk of Funk and Wagnalls asking what word described it. Funk couldn’t find one, so he invented the word “quasquicentennial” and it soon appeared in print and entered the English language. It’s an important word on this occasion, and it is a rare word in California -- only 94 other California cities are old enough to have had a quasquicentennial.
February 22, 2018 Speeches
For years, I’ve only been able to report to you what we SHOULD be doing to revive the economy. Today, FINALLY, I can report to you what we HAVE done – and THAT it is working.
