The Rim Fire Emergency Salvage Act was approved today by the House of Representatives as part of a larger bill, H.R. 2954 (The Public Access and Lands Improvement Act). Title IX of that bill comprises the Rim Fire Salvage Act. The salvage language is the result of consultations with Democratic offices and with the U.S. Forest Service. Senate Democrats, backed by the President, refused to resolve the differences between the two houses through the process of negotiation and compromise that is essential to any bicameral legislative system. As a result, the system seized up and produced a prolonged stalemate, a partial government shutdown and a looming debt crisis.

Congressman Tom McClintock today introduced HR 3188, the Yosemite Rim Fire Emergency Salvage Act. The measure provides for the expedited salvage of fire-killed timber in the Stanislaus National Forest and the Yosemite National Park by waiving environmental regulations and litigation that often delay salvage operations until the timber becomes worthless.
