H.R. 2157 – Disaster Supplemental: No

Vote Notes on Legislation

H.R. 2157 – Disaster Supplemental: No.  This bill shamelessly uses disaster assistance as an excuse for billions of dollars of pork-barrel projects unrelated to the disasters.  Only 30 percent of this bill is emergency disaster spending and only 14 percent was actually requested by the administration.  It includes $2.4 billion for the scandal-plagued “Community Development Block Grant” program which has funded such past boondoggles as “doggy day care centers” and extends discredited flood insurance subsidies with no reform.  Among the disasters funded in this bill are the recent wildfires in California, but it leaves our state more vulnerable in the future by speeding up the draw-down of existing appropriations in the Disaster Relief Fund.
