Herlong Post Office to Remain Open

October 25, 2011

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has confirmed to Congressman McClintock’s office that the Herlong post office is no longer on the list of postal facilities slated for closure.

“I have vigorously opposed attempts to close rural post offices while the USPS maintains its monopoly on first-class mail delivery,” remarked Congress McClintock. “If the USPS wants to close rural post offices or reduce services and leave residents with no alternatives, I believe – and will insist – that it should surrender its monopoly status so that energetic entrepreneurs can fill the breach and offer these communities more efficient and more economical service than the current bureaucratized arrangement.”

In communication with the Postmaster General in support of keeping the Herlong post office open, Congressman McClintock stated that the closure of post offices in small towns not well-served by other facilities would run contrary to the mission of the USPS to provide prompt, reliable and efficient service to patrons in all areas without discriminating against rural communities. Specifically, Congress has stipulated that “no small post office shall be closed solely for operating at a deficit, it being the specific intent of Congress that effective postal services be ensured to residents of both urban and rural communities.”
